How to download movie and TV scripts

Turning your favorite shows into study material is a great way to learn. To get started, you will first need to install some software on your computer. There may be other programs that do the job, but here we'll focus on Language Reactor.

First, install Chrome web browser if you don't have it already. Language Reactor is an add-on for Chrome, so you'll need to have Chrome running first.

Once running Chrome, visit the Chrome Web Store to search for add-ons.

  • In the Chrome Web Store search box, enter: Language Reactor
  • Choose Language Reactor from the search results
  • Click the Add to Chrome button
  • Click Add extension

Now that the Language Reactor Chrome extension is installed:

  • Visit either Youtube or Netflix.
  • Search for a video that has subtitles in your target language (in Youtube search filters, select Subtitles/CC).
  • Look for a video with subtitles in both your target and source languages
  • Start playing the video.

Notice that next to the playback controls at the bottom of the video there is now an LR on/off switch, and a settings gear icon.

  • Make sure that the LR toggle switch is set to on
  • Click the LR settings gear icon
  • Under Youtube subtitle language, selected the language you are studying
  • Under Translation language, select the language you speak
  • If you don't see your languages in these settings, you may have chosen a video that does not have subtitles for your languages.

Once you're playing a video with subtitles for both your spoken language and your language of study, you should see a right-hand pane while your video plays, with a script of what you're watching. The script contains a transcript of the spoken converstation, plus a translation into your language.

  • On the top-right of the captions pane, next to the LR settings gear icon - click the export icon.
  • Select export option Print (HTML) or Excel
  • Click Export
  • Save the file to your device

That's it! Now you've got a script you can study while enjoying your shows. If you happen to be studying Mandarin, we have some more suggestions for you.
